Marchamalo salt flats
Between Cabo de Palos and the start of La Manga, the traditional Marchamalo salt pans spread panes of water tinted pink by plankton and host a shifting bird colony — flamingos included — that makes their sunsets the area's quiet postcard. A protected space in the Mar Menor's orbit and a classic for evening walks and photography.
Practical facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| From Cabo de Palos | ~3-4 km · 5 min by car or a flat bike ride |
| Access | Free along the perimeter and permitted tracks; never enter the pans |
| Best moment | The last hour of daylight; pink light guaranteed, flamingos by the day |
| What to bring | Binoculars and discretion: it is habitat, not scenery |
Local warning
The birds are there because they are rarely disturbed: keep distance, keep quiet, keep dogs leashed. Perimeter tracks are unpaved — after rain (a rarity), mud.
