Cycling between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor: 4-5 days

Plan summary
Four or five days on the bike based in Cabo de Palos, with an unusual menu: absolute flat around Europe's largest saltwater lagoon for family riding or fast tempo work, a paved climb closed to motor traffic (the Cenizas) that is a small cyclist's luxury, the La Manga sand bar between two waters, and the mining hills for anyone wanting short, scenic climbing. Ideal season: October to May — winter here is cycling high season, 15–18 °C and quiet roads.
Key facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Duration | 4-5 days / stages of 30–80 km to taste |
| Best season | October–May; summer only at dawn |
| Base | Cabo de Palos |
| Bike | Road, gravel or e-bike; rentals in the area — verify seasonal availability |
| Terrain | Flat on lagoon and La Manga; short kickers on the cape; one sustained climb |
| Who it is NOT for | Anyone chasing long mountain passes: climbing here is short and punchy |
Day 1 — The cape and the La Manga bar
Shake-out ride: village to lighthouse, then north along La Manga between the two seas — Mediterranean right, lagoon left — as far as legs fancy (out-and-back, dead flat).
Cabo de Palos–north end of La Manga: ~20-22 km each way · flatSeasonal warning: in July–August the RM-12 and La Manga's Gran Via carry dense traffic — this is a mid- and low-season plan; in summer, dawn only.
Day 2 — Around the Mar Menor

The queen stage of flat: the lagoon perimeter along its inner shore — Mar de Cristal, Los Urrutias, Los Alcazares, Santiago de la Ribera, Lo Pagan and the San Pedro salt flats to the north — with dozens of stop-and-swim points. Full loop ~70-80 km, or a partial out-and-back version.
Profile: virtually no meaningful climbing — the friendliest long stage on the Spanish Mediterranean Bike-lane stretches alternate with shared road: care through towns — signage varies; Komoot hosts updated Campo de Cartagena routes mapped by local ridersDay 3 — The Cenizas: the climb without cars
The local jewel: the old military road to the Bateria de las Cenizas (~310 m), paved and closed to motor traffic — a short, steady climb crowned among pines with the whole Mediterranean below. Combine with a loop through Los Belones and the Calblanque fringe.
Climb: ~4-5 km at ~6-8% average from around the Portman road · car-freeDay 4 — The mining hills (or active rest)
For hungry legs: the punchy ramps of the La Union hills among headframes and mineral earth, descending to Portman and its filled-in bay. Active-rest alternative: a morning of coves and snorkelling plus the Agrupa Vicenta mine visit (on foot, paid — verify times).
Day 5 (optional) — Cartagena along the coast
Ride to Roman Cartagena (~28 km each way) to finish with heritage and a cafe asiatico by the harbour: the definitive local reward.
Where to stay
A fixed base in Cabo de Palos keeps every stage radial with no luggage transfers. For cycling groups and families, 95Lighthouse Villa — 5 bedrooms, 10 guests, seafront on Levante Beach; bike storage can be arranged with the accommodation — is our group recommendation; affiliation disclosed here.
Frequently asked questions
Road bike or gravel?
Both work: the lagoon loop and La Manga are pure road; the mining hills and the Calblanque fringe reward gravel. A road bike with friendly gearing covers everything.
Are rentals available?
Rental shops operate around the Mar Menor, with more choice in season — verify availability and book ahead, especially e-bikes and specific sizes.
Can you ride in summer?
Dawn only: heat and traffic rule out anything later. The sweet season is exactly the opposite of beach season — October to May.
Is the full lagoon loop family-friendly?
Not in full (70-80 km); in sections, absolutely: the inner shore between Mar de Cristal and Los Urrutias is flat with constant swim stops.
How to adapt this plan
- 4-day version: drop day 5 (Cartagena) or fold it into day 4.
- Family version: days 1 and 2 in sections + day 3 to half-climb; beach for the rest.
- Winter: the whole plan at its best; pack a windproof — the poniente cools the lagoon shore.
