Five family days on the Costa Calida: two seas, a lighthouse and a mine

Family with bicycles by the sea on the Costa Calida, Cartagena, Spain
Two seas, every pace

Plan summary

Five days based in Cabo de Palos, designed for families with children aged 4 to 14, in summer. The destination's advantage is unique in Europe: two seas ten minutes apart — the Mediterranean side of the cape, with coves and snorkelling, and the Mar Menor, a shallow warm lagoon where children can stand fifty metres from shore. The mix: beach, a first snorkel, a wild dunes park, a Roman city and a real visitable mine. Budget stays low — most settings are free. And the plan includes the warnings guidebooks skip: August parking, jellyfish honesty and what to do on levante days.

Who it is NOT forAnyone wanting waterparks and resort entertainment: this is nature, village life and heritage

Day 1 — Levante Beach and the village on foot

Settle in and adapt at Levante Beach: fine sand, a gentle slope and a long shallow stretch perfect for small children, with the lighthouse and La Manga on the horizon. Late afternoon, stroll the fishing harbour — boats unload at the end of the day — and take the mandatory ice cream on the seafront.

August tip: beach before 11:00 or after 17:00 — village parking saturates at midday
Poniente ✓Levante ✗With levante there are waves at Levante Beach: swap in the Mar Menor day (day 3)

Day 2 — First snorkel in the cape coves

Morning of beginner snorkelling at Cala Fria or the rocky coves by the lighthouse: transparent water, damselfish, salema and — with luck — an octopus. Mask, snorkel and water shoes (rocky entries; sold in the village). Children who swim well can join a guided snorkel trip with a harbour dive centre — the tankless version of the marine reserve.

Afternoon: the Cabo de Palos lighthouse (1865). The guided climb takes ~30 min and costs 6 €, in small groups — book ahead. Children love the lamp room and the true story of the steamship Sirio, whose 1906 sinking turned the village's fishermen into heroes.

Day 3 — The other sea: Mar Menor with small children

Lagoon day. In the Mar Menor (inner side of La Manga, or the beaches at Mar de Cristal / Playa Honda, 10–15 min by car) the water runs 2–4 °C warmer than the Mediterranean, there are no waves, and the bottom deepens so slowly that children can stand for tens of metres. It is also the area's best setting for family paddle-boarding and kayaking, with seasonal rentals.

Cabo de Palos–Mar de Cristal: ~8 km · ~12 min
Poniente ✓Levante ✓The lagoon is sheltered: the all-winds backup plan

Honest note: the lagoon's ecological condition varies by spot and by year; beaches fly daily flags and municipal updates are the reference. If one beach isn't at its best on a given day, move along the shore — the lagoon has dozens of access points.

Day 4 — Calblanque: the beach from before the hotels

Excursion to Calblanque Regional Park: unspoilt golden beaches, fossil dunes and Mediterranean scrub, without a single building. With children, Playa Larga is the most comfortable. There are no beach bars and almost no shade: bring water, a coolbox and a parasol.

Cabo de Palos–Calblanque access: ~9 km · ~15 min to the checkpoint In July–August car access is restricted and a shuttle runs from Los Belones — check current times

Evening: Cabo de Palos' summer craft night market (dates follow the municipal calendar — check posters in the village) and a dinner of marineras (a breadstick ring topped with ensaladilla and an anchovy — Murcia's signature aperitif) or caldero if your children are rice enthusiasts.

Day 5 — Roman Cartagena or the La Union mine

Two possible endings, both half an hour away:

Where to stay

With children, logistics are everything: sleeping on Levante Beach itself removes the car (and August parking) from the daily equation. For large families or two families travelling together, 95Lighthouse Villa — 5 bedrooms and 10 guests on the seafront of Levante Beach — is this plan's natural recommendation; this guide's affiliation with the villa is disclosed here. Smaller families will find apartments within walking distance of the beach.

Frequently asked questions

Mediterranean or Mar Menor for small children?

Mar Menor for non-swimmers (warm, waveless, standing depth for tens of metres); the Mediterranean coves for confident swimmers who want fish. This plan uses both — that alternation is exactly its point.

Are there jellyfish?

It depends on the year and the sea: on the Mediterranean side presence comes and goes in pulses; the Mar Menor has its own species and councils net off swimming areas. Practical rule: the day's flag and the lifeguards' information decide.

Can this plan be done without a car?

Days 1–3, yes, staying in the village. Calblanque has a summer shuttle from Los Belones, and a bus line links Cartagena and Cabo de Palos, but frequencies change by season — check official timetables before relying on them. With children and coolboxes, the car wins.

What do we do on a levante day with children?

Cross to the Mar Menor (sheltered), visit the La Union mine or Cartagena. The levante is the reason every day of this plan has an indoor or lagoon alternative.
